Overview

Agumbe is a picturesque village situated in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka. Nestled in the lush Western Ghats, it is located about 98 km from Mangaluru and 55 km from Udupi. The village stands at an elevation of approximately 823 meters above sea level and is renowned for its thick rainforests, cool climate, and breathtaking sunset views.

Often referred to as the “Cherrapunji of South India,” Agumbe receives extremely heavy rainfall, particularly during the monsoon months. Surrounded by dense forests, waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, the region is a haven for nature enthusiasts, trekkers, and researchers.

Agumbe is also famous for the presence of the King Cobra, one of the longest venomous snakes in the world. The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station is located here and is dedicated to studying king cobras and the rich rainforest ecosystem.

The forests around Agumbe support a wide variety of wildlife and plant species, including:

  • Snakes
  • Birds
  • Butterflies
  • Rare plants and amphibians

The village still preserves traditional houses and temples that reflect the heritage and culture of coastal Karnataka. One of the most important religious sites is the Sri Venugopala Krishna Temple, a centuries-old temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and a significant spiritual center for local residents.

Agumbe gained nationwide recognition as the filming location for the classic television series Malgudi Days, which beautifully portrayed the village’s traditional lifestyle and scenic surroundings.
