The origins of Nainital are steeped in both mythology and colonial history.
According to Hindu legend, Nainital is one of the 64 Shakti Peethas, where the eye (Nain) of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen — giving the lake its name, Naini Lake. The ancient Naina Devi Temple, located on the northern shore of the lake, is a revered pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess.
In modern history, Nainital was founded in 1841 by a British businessman named P. Barron, who was captivated by its natural beauty. The British soon developed Nainital as a summer retreat and an educational hub, establishing prestigious institutions such as St. Joseph’s College and Sherwood College. During the colonial period, it also served as the summer capital of the United Provinces.
After India’s independence, Nainital continued to flourish as a beloved hill station, blending its British-era charm with local Kumaoni culture and traditions.
