Prayagraj is one of the oldest and most sacred cities in India, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The city is well known for its deep spiritual significance, historical heritage, and cultural importance. It is especially famous for the holy meeting point of three rivers, which attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists every year.
The name Prayagraj comes from Sanskrit words meaning “King of Sacred Places.” In ancient times, the city was known as Prayag and was considered one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India. It is mentioned in several ancient Hindu scriptures including the Rigveda and Ramayana.
During the Mauryan period, the great emperor Ashoka established his rule in this region and built the famous Ashoka Pillar, which still stands as a symbol of the city's ancient history.
In the 16th century, the Mughal emperor Akbar recognized the strategic and cultural importance of the city. He constructed the massive Allahabad Fort near the confluence of the rivers and renamed the city Allahabad.
During British rule, Allahabad developed into an important administrative and educational center. The city played a significant role in India's freedom struggle and was closely associated with leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru.
In 2018, the government officially restored the city's historic name Prayagraj, reflecting its ancient cultural and religious identity.
