Overview
The Chennakeshava Temple in Belur (also known as Beluru Chennakeshava Temple) is one of the most celebrated monuments of Karnataka. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Chennakeshava), this temple is an outstanding example of Hoysala architecture, attracting devotees, historians, and art lovers from all over the world.
History
- Built in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty, the temple was commissioned to commemorate his victory over the Cholas at Talakad.
- It took over 100 years to complete, with contributions from several Hoysala kings.
- The name Chennakeshava translates to “Handsome Vishnu”, representing Lord Vishnu in a beautiful form.
Architecture & Highlights
- Star-shaped platform: Like many Hoysala temples, it stands on a unique star-shaped base.
- Intricate carvings: The outer walls display over 650 friezes and sculptures, depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana, and Upanishads.
- Madanikas (sculpted maidens): The bracket figures of celestial dancers are considered the epitome of Hoysala artistry.
- Main sanctum: Houses the idol of Lord Chennakeshava – a 6 ft tall image of Vishnu.
- Other shrines: The temple complex includes shrines dedicated to Soumyanayaki (consort of Chennakeshava) and Ranganayaki.
- Pillars & Hoysala Emblem: Lathe-turned pillars, the emblem of Sala slaying the tiger, and detailed ceilings highlight the craftsmanship.
